Is there a way to tell if a smoking engine has bad rings vs bad valve guides? When I pull the valve cover and run the engine I swear there is smoke coming from the two holes the push rods for number

A simple test is to see if it smokes at idle or when you let off the gas, it's guides. If it smokes when you accelerate, it's rings. Smoke coming from the push rod holes is just crankcase pressure. -

Yup, as Frank says, if the valve guides are bad, it will smoke whenever manifold vacuum is high, because the vacuum in the cylinders is sucking oil right past the valves. If the rings are bad, it wi
