If you're using contact points, not electronic ignition, check your point gap at every distributor lobe. I had a Spitfire that had worn two of the four lobes down and did exactly what you describe.

Hi Bob, I recently had a similar problem. I swapped the jet assemblies between the 2 carbs (on Strombergs, not sure if you can with SUs) and the problem moved to to other 2 cylinders. I then swapped
