Geo I did mine recently and pulled the driveshaft. Don't recall if it was necessary but I did regrease the ujoints at the same time. I was able to undo the front one from underneath, a lot of effort

Those are supposed to be tapered pipe threads, so no washer nor a place to put one. If your magnetic plug has a head that is pulling up against the surface of the pan, you likely have the wrong plug
