I can't imagine how this could relate to what happened to you but a noise under load or acceleration is usually a main bearing. I would call it a thud but it depends on how an individual describes it

Aside from Bill's theory, it might be an ignition crossfire. Check the routing of the plug wires. It's different from your description, but ignition arcing usually sounds like a sharp snapping sound.
