Powdered laundry or dishwasher soap works pretty well... sprinkle it out over the mess, broom it into the affected area, then pour a little hot water at a time over it and keep at it with the broom.

The "my old ladies - old man" (aka my step father) use to send me out with kitty litter and gasoline. I would pour the gas on the oil stain then brush on the kitty litter. It actually work quite well
