My later 1965 Mk I (9472289) has a small curved glass mirror with a rigid vinyl back cover, like the dash top. Depending on weather, atmospheric contaminants, and just plain evaporation of the vinyl

Tim- I just saw a mirror on epay that sounds like the one you are describing. The back is metal and from a Seris 2 Alpine. In the pic you can see the rivet heads and lack of vynal- my guess, you too

That certainly answers my question and I appreciate your input. I am not too familiar with early Alpines and didn't realise they had mirrors with no covering. Perhaps I will have a go at selling it
