How many miles are on the 216? Would rebuilding the engine and transmission give you the power you need? I'm kind of a lead foot, so I'm always going to lean towards the V 8. Installing a V 8 is not

The 216 is a "low speed engine" because it uses Babbitt bearings (vice more modern "insert" bearings) and is . . . Gutless. With the stated criteria of "near original" and "stick shift," I'd suggest
