- Kirk, your engine number breaks down as follows: F = Flint Plant (T = Tonawanda Plant) 4 = Month (April) 17 = Day S = 6000 series and up, "283" The "S" was also used in 1958 for the same models. Howe

- Are you sure the last letter is an "S"? It seems that the first three indicate that it was built at the Flint plant and that it was built on 4/17 but the S doesn't seem to fit for the 55-59 years at

- Yep sounds like a 57 block to me, my dads 57 1/2 ton had a 283 block from the factory although I am told that there was some difference between the passenger car version, what I do not know. My 57 B

- Kirk, I have done a little more research on your engine and here is what I I was wrong...."S" was used '57, '58 and '59 (I missed the '59). My book lists '58 & '59 as 283 4 barrel. Is yours a 2v or 4

- I am very grateful for the research you have done. I believe that 3731548 is the casting number because I can see 731548 now that I have cleaned it better. It does have the cannister type oil filter
