Kirk, your engine number breaks down as follows: F = Flint Plant (T = Tonawanda Plant) 4 = Month (April) 17 = Day S = 6000 series and up, "283" The "S" was also used in 1958 for the same models. Howe

Are you sure the last letter is an "S"? It seems that the first three indicate that it was built at the Flint plant and that it was built on 4/17 but the S doesn't seem to fit for the 55-59 years at

Yep sounds like a 57 block to me, my dads 57 1/2 ton had a 283 block from the factory although I am told that there was some difference between the passenger car version, what I do not know. My 57 B

Kirk, I have done a little more research on your engine and here is what I I was wrong...."S" was used '57, '58 and '59 (I missed the '59). My book lists '58 & '59 as 283 4 barrel. Is yours a 2v or 4

I am very grateful for the research you have done. I believe that 3731548 is the casting number because I can see 731548 now that I have cleaned it better. It does have the cannister type oil filter
