No, a backwards reading would indicate that something is drawing current while the truck is off. If the reading is forward with the key off then most likely the needle is slightly bent and "hanging"

If anything (lights, etc,) are drawing current, your ammeter will show it, regardless of the key position. (In 1949, the radio stayed on with the key off. I don't know when they changed that - maybe
