This is very timely...I am about to paint my fire truck. I have ALL of the metal sandblaster and was told by my paint supplier that I didn't need to etch prime, I only need to put 3 coats of Urethane

I think anyone that can take the time to prep the area for a close fit with the donor panel and welds in short burst "spot welds" allowing the metal to cool to avoid warping the metal can do the job.

I have been fretting with the process of replacing the panel between my drivers door and the rear fender on my 49 sub. I liked your idea of backing up the seam with brass to get better heat control.

Make sure you account for the width of the cutting tool blade/grinder when fitting your template. You can always grind it down a little to make a better fit. But you can also cut it short twice! ;-)
