The bolts holding the exhaust to the intake manifolds should be the last ones you tighten. Assemble with them loose and assure there is enough play for the faces to be in the same plane against the h

The faces that mate with the head need to be true (flat ,square, etc ) with the head. THis sometimes requires machining. No need to worry about the back side where the fasteners go. Dave Handley 51 G

Anything you can do to align the manifold mating surfaces will help in installation and prevent leaks and blown gaskets. These weren't much of a precision fit from the factory, there is lots of room
