You are right they are welded, I used a die grinder to unweld them. Question, are your sides bad? I think if I had it to do all over again I would buy a new front panel, install it then sandblast the

The entire bed should be bolted together only. Only factory welds are the spot welds that hold the angle at the bottom of the sides. A lot can happen to a truck in 47 years. Bruce K 57 3200 Mt. Iron,
