I have no reason to machine the face where the brakes ride on the drums. I only want to open up the bore at the hub so that it will go on and come off easier next time. The drum itself is in fine sha

Bruce, not reccommended! Weight of truck rides on that hub center, rather than the studs then. Just clean it up good both peices, and maybe put some Anti-sieze on those surfaces. It looks like leaded

Beg to differ. The weight of the truck rides on the hub, not the drum. I am not making any changes to the hub, only to the center bore of the drum. The only force the drum transmits is the torque of
