If it's a GMC the VIN and the engine serial number are not the same. GMC engine number was a displacement code, production number, and (I think) date code. I don't know about Chevy, but I don't think

I don't know about ADs but on TF trucks the VIN should be spot welded to the driver's side windshield post. If its attached with pop rivets or screws look out. robert -- two small clutch head screws.

Try looking on top of the left side frame rail in front of the parking brake bracket. I'm not sure about GMCs but this is were it is on Chevy's. I'm not sure but I believe it is also stamped farther
