I've heard that a lot of the roads back then were not paved like today and a they got really muddy when it rained, so you would pull over and slide out on the passenger's side on to the grass or side

Don't know if this helps, but a few years back, I too ran into the same problem, lock on the passengers side. I don't know if it's true for AD trucks, but on my 56, I just swapped sides with the hand

Jim, it couldn't be easier. Bought the locking mechanism from Truck Stop in Orange, CA, unbolted the handle, popped out the old button, which, as I recall, had a snap retainer, and pushed in the new
