On these older vehicles that did not have overflow tanks as standard equipment, you should not fill the radiator all the way to the top. If you look, the radiator should have a fill line about 1 1/2"

Just a note. Don't forget that you were supposed to leave about an inch or so of air above the cold coolant level in the radiator to allow for expansion. Expansion tanks didn't come until the 70's. T
