RPM at idle should be in the 650 to 700 range. It sounds like the fast idle cam on the carb is not releasing and dropping down your idle to the normal idle range. Try giving it a good soaking of car

Okay, here come the flames, but Auto Zone usually carries carb cleaner on sale 2 for $3, or $2.29 a can. Wal Mart, K Mart, or any auto supply house should be able to fill your order relativly cheaply
