Hi list, Being a new Roadster enthusiast I am thankful for all the recent "talk" about the 1600 engine. I will retain my original 1600 engine. since I have begun my 69 1600 restoration I've been losi

If you can get a 5 speed get one. It's a better tranny and really brings the revs down on the highway. If you stick with the 4 speed, rebuild it before putting it back in the car or at least carefull

Thanks to all for the input. I would prefer to leave it the way its supposed to be. I have to worry about putting the body back together again first before working on the engine. Thank again Deena 69

My 1600 with 4 speed is nice around town and easily cruises at 80 so why change except for the sake of change itself. If I blew my 4spd and had an extra 5 spd, I'd probably have different ideas.... d

I had to pull my 4 speed as it had a bad synchro and instead installed a rebuilt 5 speed. It is a better tranny although for stock 1600s 1st gear is pretty high and you have to slip the clutch more

It was asked: Well, you didn't comment on the most important question: What is the intended use of the car? If you're building an around-town cruiser, IMHO the 4 speed is a nice tranny. Light, clean

I supposed I'll have to try both and make up my mind. :-) I'll probably start with the 4 speed, see how it goes, and then decide to do the 5 speed. I anticipate driving on the freeway quite a bit. So

I have been thinking on trying the 3.7 rear diff with the 4 spd. Not as big a change in the 1st gear and a slightly better top speed (on paper anyway). Has anyone tried this? Daryl '66 1600 speed. or

Do yourself a favor and rip apart the tranny and replace the synchros and inspect the countergear and replace the countershaft bearings and shaft. You don't want to have to rip your tranny again beca
