Could this be the reason Shelby recommended running the 260's in the Lemans Tigers while his own cars had 289's? Naw.. not 'ol Shel.

The stock 260 with Ford 2 bbl had 164 HP. The stock 289 with Ford 2 bbl had 200 HP. Do the math.

I wonder if the choice to use a 260 VS 289 in the Tiger LeMans cars was simply a matter of homologation. In 1964, was the "prototype Class" the same as Formula Libra (open)? I highly doubt it. A 289

I don't know about the Le Mans rules other than displacement class (e.g., under 5 liters), but the legend is that Rootes asked Shelby to supply the engines and asked his advice on which displacement

The biggest intrinsic difference is the heads, not the displacement. Remember, the Gordon Chittendon, Wally Cartwright prepped Larry Reed Sports Cars set an AHRA record 108.00 mph, 12.95 second 1/4 m

Without looking at LeMans rules for 1964, I would surmise that the 'go with stock displacement' rule wouldn't apply to what was really a custom car (a fastback) that some sources said actually came f

It's really easy to speculate about who did what. We really need to ask the people who were there. Did Rootes supply the engines or did they ask for race ready 260's? Since Ford was getting very inte
