I went up to BJ's Wholesale Club (like Sam's Club, or Costco, etc.) and bought the Exide Group 26 for about $34. It's a 5-year battery. There are two small tabs at the base that make it a tight fit,

I picked up a battery carrier clamp from Harbor Freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=286); it was only a couple of dollars and makes it easy to pick up the batter

Thanks to all who responded to my dilemma re NAPA's discontinuance of the 6v that fit the MGB battery bins. I decided to convert to single battery and try the Group 26 12V available through Walmart.
