No, it doesn't _need_ to be detached. Original tops had a flap there that was glued to the bow. Many did not glue the flap of replacement tops because you can fold the top a bit tighter if the bar c

No, the flaps in the hood material are supposed to be glued or stitched to it. As an aside I found the bow always took up a position behind the seam rather than underneath it, which didn't look right
