The 3.9 will bolt right up, but if you are switching to a 3.9 to use with a 5 speed, I suspect you will be happier keeping the 4.22. I have recently been driving a '72 Midget with a 5 speed and a 3.
I second Gerard's comment about the 5sp and the 3.9, btdt. I went back to the 4.2 I'm showing about 70mph at 4k rpm. Motor redline at 7K. Brief sprints of 80 or 90+ still possible when needed. Regar
I don't understand all of the complaints with the 5-speed and the 3.9. I'm actually considering swapping my 3.9 for a 3.7. I can pull strong up past 100 (and yes, my speedo is dead on) with the 3.9.
I agree with Larry. I have the 3.7, a 5-speed, with a 1275 also. Just hold each gear longer. Other than from a dead stop in first, you aren't giving up a thing. With a 4.22 you might get off the line
