In the USA you should always have the car's registration in the vehicle. The proof of ownership (ie the title, bill of sale, etc.) is not necessary, and you don't have to be the owner of the car. I

I've never kept my Certificate of Ownership in the car. If someone stole the car, it would be that much easier for them to transfer it away from me and that much harder for me to prove it was mine. C
