I should have also mentioned that the belt has 1/2" deflection when depressed in the centre. Is it possible that the noise is coming from the vacuum on the distrib. I can't get it to hold vacuum when

The "banshee" description really sounds as if the alternator is jamming (ceasing to rotate), causing the shrieking of a tortured belt in combination with a sudden lack of juice. Try removing the belt
