Simon--you must place the ammeter in series with the battery. The best way to do this is first disconnect the battery. Second, disconnect both ends of the brown wire leading from the starter solenoid

It will matter which way that ammeter is connected as far as positive and negative. If the ammeter is connected backwards it will read backwards. In other words it will read discharge when it actuall
