My guess is to rinse out the engines cooling passages after all the work. Why waste good antifreeze for a wash down. I didn't do this when I rebuilt my Pontiac engine. No harm ever came to it. - -Ma

Can't say for certain, but I suspect tahat it has to do with the relatively poor heat transfer of anti-freeze as compared to water. Early "bedding in" of the rings, etc. generates a lot of heat. Wate
