What are the causes of backfiring. I just put in this Pertronix, but have not pulled the plugs yet to regap them (or clean them). Also, could the carburetor need adjusting? LOTS of backfiring. Jeff H

Lean fuel/air mixture ratios can be one cause, but too much advanced ignition timing, and poor gasoline are a main concern. I do not know the load conditions on your engine, or your distributor mech

Jeff- Since you had the dist. cap off did some of the plug wires come off. Sounds to me like you may have a couple of wires crossed on the cap and it is misfiring, creating a backfore situation. Luck

Did you install the Pertronix module in your stock distributor or did you install the Pertronix Plug'n Play Distributor? There is a design flaw with the distributors that prevents them from fitting

I bought two of them, found the same problem on both. Called their Engineering department and found that the flaw was part of their design. The housing does not allow the distributor gear to drop do
