You can use a "pickle fork". Or a ball joint separator. Orrrrrr.....put a good sized hammer on the far side of the outer part of the joint and hold it tight against. Then smack the opposite side with

But .. do I want to let the ball out? Maybe I'm goin' about this all wrong. I think I want the tapered (?) bolt to slide out of the steering arm (that is attached to the back of the axle stub mount)?

You will never get the ball out unless you break something, or if it's so worn out that you shouldn't be using it. I believe Geoff meant that the taper will pop loose. You want to be hammering on the

If you are going to replace the boots anyway, I'd use the pickly fork splitter. They are cheap from Pep Boys. Note that you want the narrower of the two that are commonly sold. The trick of banging

Yeah, but really, the pickle fork is cheap and fast and 100% will get the job done, especially if you are replacing the rubber anyway. _____________________________________________________________ Je

I think by far the best choice is the "pickle fork" ball joint separator. Least likely to cause additional damage. If you don't have one, check with local auto parts stores - some will loan or rent

If your aim is to replace the rubber gaiters, don't remove the ball joint from the steering arm. You need to back off the locknut and then unscrew the track rod from the ball joint, leaving the latt
