Looks like we got lucky. They're cast iron not aluminum. They were too heavy for aluminum, painted black and the threads looked like cast iron so I tried the magnet test and sure enough they're iron.

Remove a bolt from one of the complete units and measure the thread pitch of the bolt. There are several different metric thread pitches for a given bolt diameter as well as the two SAE thread pitch
