- One "incompatibility" I know of is that the early blocks don't have the forward pair of holes drilled for mounting an alternator, but you can use a long bolt and a spacer tube and make it work. That'

- Well, you got your 3-main and 5-main engines... one would have to assume the main caps are not interchangeable. Why do you want an "early" block for a 1980 MGB? They aren't drilled for the alternator

- Well, how early is early? I went the other way, from an 18GH to an 18V. The GH block has studs on the mains, the GV uses bolts. Are they the same otherwise? It's moot. You don't swap main caps around
