Hi James, I separate them whenever I do a rebuild. Almost impossible not to and do a good job. Because the nylon insert in the bolt is usually toast, I use thread locker when I re-assemble them. BTW,

The seal also has to seal against the groove, probably the OD of the groove, so it should also be very smooth. A rough cylinder wall may scratch the piston over time. I had my calipers gritblasted an
