Well you may, they're not easy. The split is because of the manufacturing method, it's crushed tight when they are installed. They fit very tight, so I imagine that's why you couldn't get them out.

No it doesn't sound right. According to my references, the Mk2 engines used bearings. However, is someone used an earlier (Mk1) cam or a later MkIV through 1500 cam, they may have fit it directly in

Instead of line boring, which most VW specialty shops can do, why not build up the bearing surfaces of the cam, unless of course the block has ovaled. Regards, Tony
