I know enough to disconnect the linkage between the carbs, borrow my buddy's gizmo that attaches to the throat of the carb and tells how much they suck (air) but then I am lost. Can somebody provide

Check to make sure the choke isn't stuck on one of the carbs. That will make the engine run quite rough (and stall) at idle, although it will run just fine at speed. I suppose you could characterize

Yep, and I'd look at the points too. Most "Carburetor" problems are located in the distributor. The carbs are the last thing you adjust when doing a tune up. CR
