Carburetion is my acknowledged area of expertise. I ran a carburetor rebuilding shop for many years. Carburetion, like camshafts, is seldom well understood by the layman. A carburetor has two functio

Correct me if I'm wrong, but webers or mikunis use fixed ventury sizes whereas the SU needle changes profile depending on amount of vacuum and air velocity. How do they differ in maintaining correct

Yes, the has SU has variable venturi size. The needle is there to change the metering jet size as the venturi size changes (thus maintaining the same ratio at different openings). In this way, the va

I forgot to answer one part of your question, I think. In a fixed venturi carb, as I stated, the jets stay the same (not counting power boosters). The ratio stays roughly the same at different thrott

Ok, so in the SU, the piston changes the airflow area and the venturi size in a fixed relationship. Bigger airflow opening, bigger venturi size. In the Weber/Mikuni/Solex, the opening size is fixed a

The SU is also referred to as a "constant velocity" carb. Not exactly correct but the velocity and "signal" (vacuum at the jet) are fairly constant. The piston acts like the mass air flow sensor and

I have observed the same thing in SUs. That is why the term "constant velocity" is somewhat of a misnomer. One of the most critical constants in wet flow testing is the pressure drop in the air colum

I chose the 40mm carbs for the following reason. It involves what happens with a large overlap cam. It is critical to keep the velocity of the air stack up to avoid reversion as the exhaust valve ope

Another twist on this for people to think about is that running a 44mm Mikuni doesn't get you much if you are also running 34mm venturis in them. The air velocity will be quite high through the ventu
