I have absolutely no clue how Carl got his out without removing the backing plate. On my car, there does not appear to be any other way, except to separate the body from the frame. The good news is

I didn't say that I had gotten mine out... Just that I have the rear axle/diff unit from drum to drum sitting in my shed. It is possible that it was done with body off. I don't know. That is just how
