Pick up a can or two of "Gunk" from any auto parts store. Spray it on the entire engine (tape over spots you don't want to get water in) and let it sit for a half hour. Then hose off with the garden

When you get to the masking stage, use aluminum foil to mask around those irregularly shaped pieces. It stays in place much better than tape and paper, and it's easy to remove when you're done.

Petrol is a little volatile, I agree, but my father always uses diesel fuel. Great solvent for oily deposits, but not flammable as a liquid at atmospheric pressure. Cheap, too. Larry had this to say:

I've also heard that C-4 works quite well to clean an engine. Inserting a bit in each cylnder and a nice, thin, even spread around the outside of the engine gives for a simple and quick solution. Alt
