Don't have the foggiest idea what could be wrong, but you can easily find out by taking a water hose about 3 feet long and hold one end to your ear and the other end to the engine bay. Keep searching

If you have a mechanics stethoscope (and who doesn't :)) put it by the alternator and listen to it, then the timing chain etc. If you don't have one a plastic tube with one end stuck in your ear may

This very thing happened to me a few months back. One of the bolts in the alternator bracket had fallen out, and allowed the bracket to occaisonally swing into the path of the alternator blades. It
