I can't say whether there is any validity to the belief that the clock will draw more current just because the battery is draining, but a general best-practice is to disconnect the battery any time

The reproduction clocks that are available use a 3 amp fuse. I installed a mini ACM fuse socket and grounded to the support bracket you mentioned. The clock powers off of a hot lead and the light is
