I am also a bit confused about the oils and their effect on cam shafts. Is this a problem only when breaking in a new engine, or should I be concerned about an engine which was rebuilt 25k miles ago

You're right, we may have to just sort this out to our own satisfaction. I've always used Castrol GTX and would like to rationalize that I can continue to use it. I may not be able to make that leap
