To anneal (soften) copper, heat to a dull red & let cool. Doubt if you can get it hot enough in the oven. Range burners or a torch or both may be needed if the part is large. Obviously, don't get it

I believe it actually doesn't matter, copper does not harden on cooling as steel does. Quenching may cause it to warp a bit, but I don't think this is a problem. However, I note that Mordy Dunst at

Annecdotal experience has been to anneal (soften) headgaskets made of solid copper. I think that this is so because 50 or so years ago the heads were not milled as smoothly as they are today. Steel h
