So I'm popping some new bearings into a 1275 last night, they are NOS Vandervells slobbered in cosmoline. I do the first 2, cleaning with WD40 and lots of rag action. They mic perfectly, all seems go

umm if brake fluid will remove metal then one of two things should be of concern: 1. VERY short lived brake system or 2. VERY poor condition old bearings.. you decide.. ;-) Lester

Everything I ever touched when I worked for Waukesha engines (think Cat only bigger) was coated in cosmoline. We washed it off in SK sovent, or gas if no solvent was available. No loss of metal, ever

Ron Cosmoline is a wax/oil mixture. I would have (and have) left it on the bearings and let the hot engine oil wash it off on start up. You do clean cosmo off electrical contacts (points) and anythin
