The rods are fairly strong, but it is possible you bent one. I had a mild knock in my MGB engine at one time, and it was a bad rod bearing - the rod was fine, bearing went bad (due to operator error

Can't help with the engine damage, but fuel pouring out of a carb with the pump clicking indicates other problems which should be addressed before doing anything with the engine, and may just have an
