I've seen numerous stories on replacing the shims in a later MG Salisbury rear axle to eliminate the free play that causes axle "clunk", but I've never seen anything written about doing the same to

You are right. The procedure is the same once you have the differential gears on the bench which means, as you surmised, taking out the whole diff unit. Lawrie British Sportscar Center --Original Me
