my vac. points right at #3 spark plug. One way to set it up is to: take off the rocker cover, turn the engine until the timing mark is at the TDC pointer, and both valves for #1 cylinder are closed.

Not sure if this will help, but I took a 1/2" and a 7/16" open end wrench and ground down the sides to make them skinny. They have made my life easier more than once. I also took a wrench with a 1/2"
