I was always told to take an engine ,or any timing related pieces apart with the engine at tdc. That way all your timing marks on cams, gears etc line up and the rotor points to #1 on the cap. I gues

A quick tip. The oil pump shaft likes to stick in the old distributor and fall out just as you pull it out of the engine. It's really fun to fish it out. Ask me how I know.

Why, yes, yes ther is. On the oil drive shaft there is supposed to be a keeper to prevent the distributor from puilling the oil drive shaft out of the oil pump. I still have mine installed.
