If you know the firing order of your engine, can't you just remove the spark plug in cylinder one, put a long screwdriver in there, and turn the engine until its at TDC and orient the dizzy so that

Eric is right, but I would add that the piston comes up twice for every time it fires. So you need to select a firing stroke, which you can do by looking at the valve positions (see a Haynes book).
