The 68 MG calls for a 60 degree dwell angle, but I can only achieve 46 degrees. When I close the point gap, the car won't start. The car backfires, all plugs are sooty, and the idle is very uneven. (

Are you looking at the 8 cylinder scale? That would be 1/2 the 4 cylinder scale so you are actually at 92 degrees. Or you could use a matchbook cover as a feeler and set the gap. The paper match itse

Set the gap to .014 to .016 then measure the dwell. Unless this is very close to 60 degrees there is something wrong either with your dwell meter (check another points car), distributor or possibly w

I can't seem to find what I am looking for in the archives so I'll ask. What are the normal dwells for 4 and 8 cyl engines, MGB and Olds V8 if it matters? Does anyone have a schematic for a dwell met

The dwell for the 25D4 distributor is 60 degrees, the 45D4 is 51 degrees, and the 35D8 27 degrees, each with a tolerance either side. Dwell can be expressed either as a percentage, as an angle or as

I finally got the dwell meter set up this morning and discovered the dwell was at 64. I know the book says 60 + or - 3, so is it terrible that it's at 64? Will there be a significant improvement if I

No. It's not hard, just a fiddle to get it right. Slacken the fixing screw *slightly* and use a screwdriver in the notch on the end of the points to tweak it slightly. Practice will teach you how mu

On that meter, I believe that you have to double the dwell reading as it is designed for an 8cyl engine. Rick -- with a $5 meter too -- Lindsay finally to /// or try http://www.team.net/cgi-bin/major

Ah Ha, I read something to that affect but turned it around thinking that I would have to double it for an 8 cyl. So I am close to 40 degrees. Can't wait to get home and bring her in line. On that me

Dereck, the way to read that is thusly; The dwell angle is a measure of the fraction of a cycle that the points remain closed -- expressed in degrees of distributor rotation (which is half the speed
