Looking at the bidding history, the winner was only bidding against himself as the other bidder (you?) only went to $1020. If the seller was also the winner then there'd be no point in bidding it up

It's called shill bidding and is forbidden - VERY much so. I don't think shill bidding happened in this case, but the idea is to prop up the price of your item so that any "real" bidders will outbid
