I have found the need to install a power outlet on my MGA i.e. cigar lighter. Moving into the modern world I have found it necessary to be able to hook up my cell phone and or GPS, no more maps flapp

You should be able to buy a generic one at any auto parts store. Not sure where you might want to mount it. Didn't the MGA have a cigarette lighter? My more modern 67BGT has one that actually works.

Even a 66 MGB roadster lacks a lighter (or an ashtray, for that matter). I'm curious, where is it located in the GT? -- Max Heim '66 MGB GHN3L76149 If you're near Mountain View, CA, it's the primer r

Not true about the lack of a ashtray. My 66 MGB came with original ashtray. I also owned a new 65 MGB many years ago and it also came with the ashtray mounted just in front of the gear selector. Just

Ashtrays were optional (it may have been dealer installed, since it was the same unit that was available in Triumphs). But we were really discussing the cigar lighter, that was non-existent. -- Max H

Or were they? That is today's question. I thought they were standard. I have mine in the dashboard and the wiring looks standard. It is located near the ignition switch, left of the toggle switches.

A lighter was a dealer-installed option. Of course, if the MGA is still positive ground, the socket will need to be mounted on some sort of insulated bracket. == David Breneman david_breneman@yahoo.c

I think the ashtrays may have been optional in the early MGBs. There's little perceived need for an ashtry (on the part of the manufacturer) if there's no lighter. My 68 MGB had a lighter and an asht

Hmm, why isolate it? Isn't a lighter like a bulb, only without the glass and having a larger filament? Wouldn't connecting the *power* side to negative work on a positive ground car? Mike '79B ground

The original question concerned using the lighter jack to power accessories like a cell phone, etc. True, a lighter has no polarity, but virtually everything else that plugs into a lighter jack does.
