I got tired of buying valve spring compressors that bend and warp. I made my own out of 1.25 X .125 square steel tube and a heavy flat washer and .5 threaded (fine threads) rod (rounded on the end)

Starrett makes plenty of dial bore gages that read in tenths of a thou.....And i find it pretty hard to believe you can do better by hand. A sheet of paper is about 0.002 on the average.. so slice it
